Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are businesses that employ up to 250 people. No one is precisely sure how many of them there are in the UK because there are lots of companies that have limited liability status but are not trading and there are lots of businesses that are sole proprietorships that have escaped the official net of the tax man, the VAT man and the registrar of companies. You will see figures that range as high as 4.3 million and as low as 3.7 million, the best estimate being around 4.0 million.
